Day 16: First Equipment Breakdown

Yesterday was a pretty uneventful day, 11 miles, flat ground, picked up after dinner to stay in a nice warm bed for another night.  Today was a totally different story. Today, about 2 hours into my walk I noticed the wheel on my hobo cart was wobbling pretty severely.  Actually…not wobbling….completely warped. The wheel was all sorts of bent out of shape and upon further inspection it was because 4 spokes came detached.  With only an extremely basic set of tools and plastic tire ‘irons’ I fought to get my tire and solid tube off the wheel.  Eventually I got everything fixed with the help of some tools borrowed from Lane, the man whose house I was broken down in front of.  2 hours later I was back on the road.

In talking to my dad about the issue we both decided my cart was basically a piece of crap, especially for the price I paid.  My dad was kind enough to find me a better quality cart on craigslist, pick up some extra parts, drive it all the way out to me past Victorville and help me get it all set up and get my mounts and things transferred from my old cart.  Now I’m all tucked away in my tent, a couple hundred yards down the road from a cock fighting ring.  Not a necessary detail but one I thought I’d share nonetheless.

We’ll see what challenges tomorrow brings.

Hey Parker!! I am a friend of your cousin Adam, he told me about this and you just passed me! I live in Victorville and wish you the best on your journey. Maybe after you finish this, you will want to do a walk for MS?? I have MS and they have something called a challenge walk that’s 30-50 miles over 2-3 days, or you could always do the Bike MS thing 🙂 if you ever want to try something new. haha!! Good luck and remember: Adventure is out there!!!
